I will freely admit I'm no fan of the Submariner. The history of Rolex to me lies in their Oyster and Datejust lines.
History aside, the aesthetics are pretty meh for the most part. Very few references catch my eye. Perhaps a 6536, 1680 or 6204, but everything else doesn't appeal to me. Except this one. The Tudor 79090.
They could be the poor mans 1680, admittedly sharing a very similar case, a similar top hat crystal with cyclops, the bidirectional bezel, and clean crisp case lines with chamfers along the lugs.
However, I don't think so. They're a watch of their own and with every bit of quality as their Rolex brethren.
The best part: they're practically modern, and still not astronomically expensive. Examples with top hat acrylics can be picked up as recently as 1994-95 models.
