В 1176 году, после женитьбы на Элеоноре Английской, король Альфонсо VIII Кастильский объявил Алькасар своей резиденцией, что стало отправной точкой в длительном периоде роскошного существования замка. Позже он стал фамильным замком монархов из династии Трастамара, побочной ветви Бургундской династии, и пережил череду расширений и перестроек.
